When do I need my tires changed?

Legally, swapping your summer tires for your winter tires must be done before December 1st. In Quebec, you must be equipped with winter tires from that date until March 15th.

Beginning March 15th, you can change your tires for summer tires. But what are the most recommended dates for your tire changes?

Although you must absolutely change your tires by December 1st, it is recommended that you change them before, once temperatures drop to under 15 degrees. This will generally bring you to the end of October or early November, which is the ideal time for your tire change.

As for the perfect time to swap your winter tires for your summer ones, March 15th is generally too early, given that snow storms are still a common occurrence after that date! It is generally safer to wait until mid-April, once spring is here to stay.

If your tires are used or damaged, then you should not wait for the end of the season. On the one hand, it is illegal to drive with tires that are too worn down. On the other hands, you will be jeopardizing your vehicle’s performance and your safety. If your tires frequently loose pressure, then that can be another sign that it is time to swap them for a new set.

You should check on the state of your tires often and pay attention to any change in road handling. Do not hesitate to contact us to help you identify any problem related to your tires or your vehicle.

Why change your tires according to the season?

Although winter tires are only mandatory over the course of a few months, it doesn’t stop you from keeping them year round, legally. But that does not mean that it is a good idea to do so.

In fact, winter tires are specially designed for cold temperatures, meaning that they have a tread compound that is very flexible. When it is hot, this compound gets softer.

Cela a plusieurs conséquences :

  • Road handling gets worse
  • Braking distances get longer
  • Your tires will deteriorate faster
  • Your fuel consumption increases

Keeping your winter tires year round is far from safe. Doing so will not help you save any money, quite the contrary! Not only will you have to spend more on fuel, you will soon have to get a new tire set as well…

Furthermore, a tire change is an inexpensive intervention that will help you save money in the long run.

As for summer tires in the winter, they are prohibited for a very simple reason: the tread compound is not flexible enough to adapt to the cold. You will lose in traction levels, even if there is no ice on the roads.

There are also 4 season tires on the market, but they all compromise on either winter or summer performance, or both. The best solution for most drivers remains changing your tires twice a year.

For a safe and enjoyable driving experience, order your tires and book your appointment with our team of professionals.
